The Road to Independence

It's good to have goals.

Achieving difficult goals requires focus.  It requires determination and a lot of effort.  It means setting aside excuses.  It means not giving in to poor performance or setbacks.  It takes careful planning and a ton of maturity.  The amount of faith that one has in oneself and one's abilities to achieve hard things directly determines their success.   We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we set goals.  We have been taught from a very early age to require a lot of ourselves and we achieve.

We also have learned that a goal not written down or uttered is only a wish.

So, in therapy today, Kori was asked to set some goals.  And her main or perhaps only goal is

To Be Independent

Independence means different things to different people.
Getting a drivers license
Going somewhere without parents
Getting Married
Home ownership

At this stage in Kori's life independence means
Getting out of bed by herself
Washing her hair
Cooking dinner for her family
Walking unassisted

I'm certain giving herself her own heparin shots is NOT on the list

But regardless of what is on the list
The success of her independence journey will be directly evident in the faith and determination she has in herself.

It's important that she not forget who she is
She is Kori

Kori is a fighter
Kori is strong
Kori is determined
Kori is smart
Kori has always accomplished every thing she has put her mind to
And NO ONE tells her she can't do something

No one ever thought it would be easy
Champions are not made overnight.

Today consisted of getting reacquainted with home.  Mom and Dad took her to rehab.  Mom did her hair and gave her a manicure and a pedicure.  She had some visitors.  And on Wednesday, she is getting her hair cut.  Any suggestions for an easy new hair-do for a girl with natural curly hair?
